The Budhanilkantha to Nagi Gompa and Kapan Monastery Day Hike is a peaceful and scenic short hike on the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley. This hike is ideal for travelers who want a few hours of walking combined with nature, spiritual heritage, and panoramic valley views while staying close to Kathmandu. The route passes through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, offering fresh forest air, quiet trails, and important Buddhist landmarks.
Nagi Gompa is a respected Buddhist nunnery and meditation center, known for its calm atmosphere and sweeping views over the valley. Kapan Monastery is one of the most famous Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Nepal, established in the 1970s and recognized worldwide for Buddhist teachings and meditation courses.
Meet in Kathmandu and drive to Budhanilkantha at around 1,400 meters, near the entrance of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. After completing park entry formalities, begin hiking through oak and pine forests with a gradual uphill climb. The trail is quiet and shaded, with occasional viewpoints overlooking the Kathmandu Valley.
After two to three hours of hiking, reach Nagi Gompa Monastery at approximately 2,300 meters. Spend time exploring the monastery area, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, and learning about its spiritual importance. The hike then continues downhill toward Kapan Monastery, following forest paths and village edges. After visiting Kapan Monastery and enjoying its wide valley views, drive back to Kathmandu, completing a rewarding day hike that blends nature, culture, and history.
